<image:caption>Space Enclosure Systems, 2014, Photo transfer onto clay, 34 x 32 in. These images and clippings originated in The Whole Earth Catalog. Printed from 1968 to 1972, the Catalog provided education and access to tools by listing products that could be used by anyone to foster a creative, self-sustainable lifestyle. Its mission of spreading information along with the inclusion of user generated content became a precursor to our present-day blogosphere. As a vestige of the the 1960’s back-to-the-land counterculture movement, the work speaks to the massive online DIY communities that exist today, empowering the reader to become a maker. These pieces exist as contemporary relics, pseudo artifacts and analogue fragments from a digital era.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Desktop Sundials, 2013, installation view, Peninsula Art Space The sundial is a fantastic pedagogical tool: It serves as a demonstrative device that lets the viewer learn on an experiential level through the physicality of the object. As the viewer locates the shadow in relation to the dial, they must also consider their relation to the sun, and to the earth's daily cycle. Learning tools interest me, because they convert abstract concepts into concrete ideas. I believe that art can function in this way as well; as a bridge between ourselves and the natural world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Impossible Shape 4b, 2012, Watercolor and graphite on paper, 9 x 12 in. An impossible object is a 2-dimensional figure, which is instantly interpreted as a representation of a 3-dimensional object. Upon further inspection, we see that it is not geometrically possible for such an object to exist. This creates a contradiction, between what we perceive and what we know to be true, leaving the viewer in a state of Aporia. My practice deals very closely with the cognitive dissonance that occurs at moments where our mind fluctuates between intuition and logic. I want my work to exist in the superposition of these two states, so that this mindset can lead us to a higher understanding of the subject. By definition, an impossible shape is one that can not exist in real space, so to look at it is always confounding. In this series, I work directly within these spaces, to try to realize something that is unrealizable.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Impossible Shapes, 2013, installation view, Scaramouche, New York An impossible object is a 2-dimensional figure, which is instantly interpreted as a representation of a 3-dimensional object. Upon further inspection, we see that it is not geometrically possible for such an object to exist. This creates a contradiction, between what we perceive and what we know to be true, leaving the viewer in a state of Aporia. My practice deals closely with the cognitive dissonance that occurs at moments where our mind fluctuates between intuition and logic.

<image:caption>Fish/Bird E34B, 2013, 211 glazed ceramic tiles, 20 x 70 x 60 in. Fish/Bird E34B is a floor/wall piece made out of 211 glazed ceramic tiles. It is based on M.C. Esher’s piece from his group “Symmetry Drawings”. Formally, the sculpture is compiled from tessellated shapes of birds and fish, which fit into each other like a jigsaw puzzle. Mimicking the original, the bird and fish tiles alternately function as foreground or background, depending on whether the eye focuses on light or dark elements.</image:caption>

      <image:title>- Parallactic Mode</image:title>
<image:caption>The Parallactic Mode, 2011, Installation view, the Fisher Landau Center for the Arts, Long Island City, New York The title for the Installation is based off of a Parallax, one of the most ancient methods that have been used by astronomers to calculate distances to celestial objects from Earth. Finding a parallax means to chart the location of an object, move your body in space, and then chart the object again. By finding the difference between the object's locations on the chart in relation to your body, you can tell how far away it is from you. This is how I would like the viewer to engage the installation. The Parallactic Mode is arranged to present the viewer with different methods of perception and analysis of the works, dictated by the relation of each piece to the body. As the viewer moves through the space, certain positions will present a new informative moment about the structure or geometry of the shapes. The further into the installation you go, the more you can gain from the work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Szilassi Polyhedron, 2011, Clay, glaze and graphite, 15 x 12 x 15 in. When viewed from a specific distance and angle from the piece, the hole in the sculpture is aligned with the shape on the wall. When standing in this “sweet spot”, the viewer can then face towards Heptahedron Set (Transparency, Up and Down) and the markings on the piece simultaneously line up to show the hidden dimensions (the back corner) of the works. These vantage points are intended to create a tension between personal “dogma” and point of view in relation to the General Principal of Relativity which states that all positions and points of reference are equivalent under the laws of physics. </image:caption>

<image:caption>Installation view: Path Maps #1, 10-D Cube (looped video animation projected onto a clay tablet) and Tetrahedron (Truncated) with Pyramid. 10-D Cube is an animation projected onto a clay slab. As the animation moves forward, its lines connect to the pre-existing drawing, and then loops by going in reverse. 10-D Cube is taking the original structure of a Tesseract (a four dimensional cube) and following the same method, continues to add on “dimensions” in time. The result is the build-up of information becoming so dense that the viewer loses track of what they are looking at. </image:caption>

In other words, removing any ring results in two unlinked rings. As a two dimensional figure, this knot appears to be geometrically sound. However, this link can not be formed from perfectly round 2D circles. In this way, it’s an impossible object.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Impossible Shapes (Paperweights) - Set A & Set B, 2012, Clay (Raku fired) with glaze, various dimensions An impossible object is a 2-dimensional figure, which is instantly interpreted as a representation of a 3-dimensional object.

      <image:title>- It's Been Hours</image:title>
<image:caption>It's Been Hours (solo show), installation view, 2012, Scaramouche, New York “From intuition one can pass to analysis, but not from analysis to intuition.” – Henri Bergson, An Introduction to Metaphysics Scaramouche is pleased to present “It’s Been Hours,” the first New York solo exhibition of artist Leah Wolff. The exhibition, which includes pieces from two recent groups of sculptures, Clocks and Impossible Shapes, is meant to advocate for new alternatives to our currently singular method of investigation. Clocks promote an intuitive understanding of time, by measuring it according to the observer’s subjective experience. When looking at Wolff’s Impossible Shapes, our mind fluctuates between what we perceive and what we know to be true. The process and product of her practice explore the cognitive boundaries of our human experience. Utilizing methods that are chiefly recognized as handmade, Wolff’s compositions are governed by the tension between their imprecision and the accuracy of a scientific model. In Modular Domes I, fired clay pieces are joined together in an arrangement reminiscent of a molecular structure. Her sculptures serve as demonstrative devices that encourage a better understanding of space and structure through the physicality of the object. In their finished form, they become an advocate for separate modes of personal discovery. Positivism asserts that observational evidence is indispensable to forming our knowledge of the world, and that all things are ultimately measurable. In contrast, according to Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle, it is impossible to measure an electron’s position and momentum simultaneously. Electrons exist in a superposition, meaning that they partially occupy all of their theoretical states at the same time, so attempting to locate their exact position via observation suggests a fundamental misunderstanding of their quality. In this way, the modern scientific method has led us to a standstill. The universe has been proven to be on the micro level immeasurable, and on the macro level far too vast to be knowable. Furthermore, it is only a small privileged class of scientists who have access to the approved technology needed to pursue these endeavors. Therefore, modern-day science becomes the institutional gatekeeper between us and the search for higher meaning, thus leading the individual to a space of intellectual disconnect from their surroundings. This problem can similarly be applied to the understanding of time, which Henri Bergson discusses in Creative Evolution. Time’s measurement is at odds with its nature, which is always relative to the position and speed of the observer. Furthermore, measuring time (in seconds, minutes etc.) does a disservice to how we intuitively understand its duration, which is always relative to the consciousness that experiences it. In An Introduction to Metaphysics, Bergson distinguishes between two contrasting modes of knowing: relative and absolute. He promotes the absolute knowledge, defining it as an understanding gained only through experience. In her wall reliefs, Wolff renders impossible shapes onto ceramic slabs. Although they are read as representations of 3-dimensional objects, upon further inspection one notes that it is not geometrically possible for such an object to exist in real life. This causes a fluctuation between intuition and logic: when looking at an Impossible Shape, our mind is forced to occupy the superposition of both states. Wolff posits that experiencing this mindset can lead the viewer to a higher understanding of what it means to occupy a superposition. As Wolff continues to play with the fundamental elements of scientific theory by utilizing intuitive methods of problem solving, her practice functions as a new method of research where meaning is gathered through making. This project was commissioned by the city of Bat Yam, Israel during the summer of 2011. Artists and collaborators Guy Ben-Ari and Leah Wolff were invited to participate in Ocean Breeze, a public sculpture project in the city of Bat Yam, Israel. The resulting collaborative piece titled “Time Loops” referred to the ideas of Gilles Deleuze about repetition as part of the human experience, and the cyclical nature of our daily habits. The installation was meant to be used by the public as a human sundial, when the viewer standing in the center of the installation could tell the time according to the location of their shadow on the ground. The show was be open to the public from August through September 2011. </image:caption>

Depicting an open right hand, it is considered a sign of protection, providing defense against the evil eye in Christian, Islamic, and Jewish traditions. See more here</image:caption>

<image:caption>Waiting Room at This Red Door, curated by Guy Ben-Ari and Leah Wolff Curated by Guy Ben-Ari and Leah Wolff Presented by This Red Door at Kunsthalle Galapagos Waiting Room was an evening of cathartic art making at Kunsthalle Galapagos. In the gallery, a worktable with tools and clay was provided and visitors were invited to re-create something that they had lost. Many times the things we lose become obsessions, causing us to compulsively replace them to fill the void of their absence. The viewer recreates the object according to their memory, altering the scale and bringing out certain details. In doing so, they are able to free themselves from the loss by collectively memorializing the object. At the end of the evening, these sculptures became a still life of lost objects. The clay is not air-dry, so its physicality is impermanent - existing only in its documentation. Waiting Room will also include a collection of works by artists Arielle Amenoff, Tryn Collins, Mark Joshua Epstein, Jesse Greenberg, Kristina Lee, Naomi Lev, Lauren Luloff, Bea Parsons and Jessica Segall.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - WAITING ROOM AT THIS RED DOOR</image:title>

In Quantum Mechanics, a superposition points to the problem of measurement, and depicts the behavior of particles as fundamentally distinct from what we know to think about or understand.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - IT’S BEEN HOURS - SOLO SHOW AT SCARAMOUCHE</image:title>
The hamsa is a palm-shaped amulet popular throughout the Middle East and North Africa, and is commonly used in jewelry and wall hangings. Depicting an open right hand, it is considered a sign of protection, providing defense against the evil eye in Christian, Islamic, and Jewish traditions. See more here</image:caption>

<image:caption>Abacus Series, Installation view, 2012 I am interested in abacus' ability to act as a converter between ourselves and the enigmatic. An abacus can function as both a tool and a toy. In both scenarios, it serves as a demonstrative device that provides an opportunity for the viewer to learn on an experiential level through the physicality of the object. </image:caption>

<image:caption>Guy Ben-Ari and Leah Wolff, Time Loops - Human Sundial, 2011, Sand, plaster and acrylic paint, 5 x 14 x 14 ft Analemmatic sundial built collaboratively with Guy Ben-Ari.

      <image:title>News - 2011 COLUMBIA MFA THESIS SHOW</image:title>

      <image:title>- Still Life</image:title>
<image:caption>Still Life - Whole Earth Catalog, 2014, Photo transfer onto clay with glaze, dimensions vary These products and images originated in The Whole Earth Catalog. Each piece is hand built, using clay slabs with images transferred onto their surface. This process is meant to contrast the many digital technologies that exist for photo manipulation, along with the increasing popularity and prevalence of CGI and the use of 3d printers. I refabricate each product using only the information available in the catalog, creating the challenge of translating a 2-dimensional image into a 3-dimensional object. Many times, much is lost in translation. Certain pieces create a sort of optical illusion: From most angles the object appears as strangely warped or skewed; however - from specific vantage points it appears as realistic. I want this body of work to function as an archive of a distinct moment in history, just before the digital revolution. These pieces exist as contemporary relics, pseudo artifacts and analogue fragments from a digital era. </image:caption>
